Breaking the silence: Tackling period poverty in Ugandan Schools

Period poverty is a pervasive issue affecting countless young girls in Uganda and remains a significant barrier to education. In this article, we delve into the impact of period poverty on girls’ education and how Yambi Community Outreach is breaking the silence.

Impact on Education:

Period poverty directly impedes girls’ access to education. In Uganda, a startling number of girls miss school during their menstrual cycles due to a lack of access to menstrual products. Various studies show that over 60% of girls in rural schools in Uganda reported missing school at least four days per month due to inadequate menstrual hygiene resources. This stark reality contributes to academic gaps and limits the future potential of these girls.

The initiative:

Yambi Community Outreach recognizes the urgency of addressing period poverty in Ugandan schools. Our comprehensive initiatives aim to provide sustainable solutions. Through partnerships with local schools, we implement menstrual health education programs, teaching girls about proper hygiene and breaking taboos surrounding menstruation. Additionally, we ensure the consistent distribution of reusable menstrual products, reducing absenteeism and empowering girls to stay engaged in their education.

Success stories and positive outcomes:

The impact of Yambi’s initiatives is evident in the success stories that emerge from the communities we serve. Agnes, a 13-year-old student from Tweyanze School of excellence in Kawuuku, shared, “Before Yambi came to our school, I used to dodge classes during my period because I had no pads so I’d fear. Now, I feel good to keep coming to school and I even shared with my sister.”

Such transformations underscore the importance of addressing period poverty for the holistic development of girls.

Path Forward:

To break the silence on period poverty in Ugandan schools, a collective effort is needed both at the community and policy level . Yambi envisions a future where no girl misses out on education due to a lack of menstrual resources.

We call on individuals, communities, and policymakers to join us in this mission. By supporting education, destigmatizing menstruation, and ensuring access to menstrual products, we can create a future where every girl can thrive academically.
